Just how well do you know your Mayberry Lawmen? Have you ever heard The Ballad of Andy and Barney? Well Barney Fife would have been proud to have the opportunity share it with you. In describing the ballad to Sheriff Andy Taylor, he said, “They made us a legend in our own time.” Little did Barney know that he was absolutely right, even if it was for the wrong reason. Have a look and a listen:

Here’s another little known fact. When the Andy Griffith Show first aired, Andy and Barney were blood kin. Yes siree Bob, they were actually cousins during the first several episodes. After that, the notion of the two being cast as blood relations was apparently “nipped in the bud.” Maybe this was due their opposing personality traits. Barney’s Pompous attitude and short-fused temper in comparison to Andy’s easy intellect and casual demeanor may just have made the kinship a bit of “a hard pill to swallow.” Here’s the very first episode from 1960:

The unlikely duo lived in, loved, and protected the sleepy little town of Mayberry, North Carolina while keeping us laughing with every unfortunate incident and situation. The show ran for eight television seasons, boasting a total of 249 beloved episodes that aired between October 3, 1960 and April 1, 1968. The series was only one of three to end while still at the top of the Nielsen ratings. The other two were “I Love Lucy” and “Seinfeld.”
